Dear Public Service Director:
More than 100 babies die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, each
year in Georgia. In the past decade SIDS deaths have decreased by almost one third
in this state, thanks to increased understanding of the factors that make a death
more likely. However, most Georgians who care for infants still do not put babies to
sleep on their backs, a position that has been proven to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Governor Miller is proclaiming October 1998 Georgia SIDS Awareness
Month. During October - and throughout the year - we are asking you to air the
enclosed PSAs that tell parents, grandparents and other caregivers how to reduce a
baby's risk of SIDS and where to get more information about SIDS.
We can also put you in touch with medical experts familiar with SIDS, and
with Georgians who have experienced a SIDS death in their family and are willing
to discuss the problem in interviews and on talk shows.
For more information about SIDS please call either me, at 404-656-4937, or Lee
Tanenbaum of the Georgia Department of Human Resources SIDS Information and
Counseling Program, at 404-679-0545.
Thank you for helping Georgia's families and children.
