Updates and Notifications
House Bill 72, Elder Abuse Signed into law on May 5, 2015
We are pleased to report that HB 72 was signed by Governor Deal with advocates and supporters surrounding him at his desk. Monsters that abuse, neglect or exploit seniors of the state of Georgia BEWARE! Georgia just got tougher on this issue.
House Bill 86, Repositioning DAS The fate of our bill
Perhaps you have already heard news coverage, but it is with disappointment that we report that Nathan Deal has vetoed the bill that would have repositioned Division of Aging Services as an attached agency to the Department of Community Health. Here is the statement released by Executive Director, Kathy Floyd on the day of the veto. "Governor Deal has vetoed HB 86 which was a priority for GCOA and CO-AGE. After multiple meetings with the Governor's staff over the last year and one meeting in February with the Governor, we are discouraged by this turn of events. However we know Governor Deal knows the importance of helping families deal with the aging of their loved ones. He and the first lady took care of his mother and his mother-in-law in the last years of their lives. Legislators overwhelmingly supported this proposed change on a bipartisan basis as did aging advocates from across the state. We look forward to working with the Governor to find solutions that will better serve Georgia's seniors."
It is time to get a vote!
Don't miss out on your chance to vote for the issues that CO-AGE selects for the 2016 session. You must join or renew your CO-AGE membership by paying the $25/annual dues by June 30, 2015! This membership is a tremendous value given all the information you will receive throughout the year, not to mention access to our events and advocacy trainings held throughout the state. Encourage a friend to join today as well. Help us build a voice for Georgia's seniors by expanding the grassroots Coalition of Advocates for Georgia's Elderly (CO-AGE). World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)
Social media is taking the world by storm in so many ways. Videos and images can go viral and gain the attention of many in just moments! GCOA wants to use social media to bring attention to the horrific reality of elder abuse that is experienced in our state and around the world. Let's show our friends, our colleagues and the world that we care about the safety of our elders by wearing purple and holding a sign with this information: Stop Elder Abuse #WEAAD.
Get your office or your friends involved. Plan ahead and let them know to wear purple. Capture the photo and email it to us before June 15th. If you are tech savvy, feel free to post your photo to Facebook and tag GCOA or tweet it and let us know @GeorgiaCOA!
