WHAT DOES WAR MAKE POSSIBLE
September 2019 marks the 80th anniv ersary of the beginning of World War II.
On September 1 1939 World War II began when Germany inv aded Poland. Nazi propaganda f alsely claimed that Poland had been planning to take ov er Germany and that Poles were persecuting ethnic Germans. To make the point the German military pretended to be Polish soldiers and acted out an attack on a German radio station. Hitler pointed to this "attack" as the reason f or his inv asion of Poland. In just weeks German f orces def eated Polish def enses. By the end of September Warsaw surrendered.

Sov iet Union in June 1941 all of Poland came under German ruthless control. The German occupiers targeted Poles who they believ ed could inspire resistance. They murdered Polish priests prof essors journalists and political leaders. More than half a million Poles were ev icted f rom their homes and properties which were then turned ov er to ethnic Germans.

There were ov er 3 million Jews liv ing in Poland bef ore World War II. Under German occupation they were required to wear armbands with a Star of Dav id. Jewish and nonJewish Poles were sent to f orced labor. But Nazi racial ideology v iewed Jews as a threat to the f uture of the German people. Now with so many Jews liv ing under their control the Germans sought a way to v anquish this enemy to f ind a "f inal solution to the Jewish question " the murder of all the Jews in Europe.
