Welcome to the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust and Anne Frank in the World e-newsletter. Updates on upcoming events, programs, and opportunities right to your inbox! Here is what is new:
On this day: January 1945
It has been 5 months since the inhabitants of the Secret Annex were arrested. They have been at Auschwitz concentration camp in Germany since 2 September 1944.
Anne and her sister Margot were transferred to Bergen-Belsen in late 1944. Their mother, Edith, was left behind. Their father, Otto, is in the sick barracks and has had no contact or news regarding his family. The Soviet Army is advancing toward the camp complex. In an attempt to hide their crimes, the SS orders the destruction of the gas chambers. Evacuation of Auschwitz begins.

January 2015 marks seventy years since the liberation of Auschwitz, the largest camp established by the Nazis. It is estimated that at minimum 1.3 million people were deported to Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945; of these, at least 1.1 million were murdered.
In this double feature of films from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, historians and survivors discuss the significance of Auschwitz.
