JUNE, 2022
Dear Partners, Colleagues and Friends, The Governor's Office of Student Achievement hopes you are having a safe and healthy summer. As you settle into the summer months, please keep the June GOSA newsletter handy for useful educational resources for families and educators, in addition to updates on some of the programs at GOSA, such as the Governor's Honors Program (GHP) and Governor's School Leadership Academy (GSLA). Additionally, you will find updates on GOSA's Literacy Resources on the Georgia Children's Cabinet site (gachildrenscabinet.org).
The Georgia Children's Cabinet resources webpage also provides useful information about keeping children safe, healthy, and educated. Regarding the Cabinet's safety goal, the Cabinet's Co-Chair, Commissioner Amy Jacobs, of the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, is again leading a campaign to "Look Again" to share the dangers of leaving children in vehicles. "As more Georgians are getting back on the road, it is critically important to remember that our children are our most precious cargo," said Governor Brian P. Kemp. "That's why Marty and I stand with DECAL in urging everyone to `Look Again' and protect the health and safety of Georgia's children. Please join us in following these simple steps to make a difference, prevent pediatric vehicular heatstroke, and save lives." View a public service announcement featuring Governor Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp here: https://youtu.be/XEwWDMjJGA8
Parents, teachers, educators, and students, thank you for persevering through another school year full of challenges and issues that were not present pre-pandemic. I hope that the resources found in this newsletter and online will be helpful during these summer months.
Best,

DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT ON MUSCOGEE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

The GSLA Teacher Leader Support Program offers an opportunity for teacher leaders to expand and deepen their leadership knowledge and skills as they explore teacher leadership opportunities from the classroom. In addition to providing direct support to teacher leaders around the state, GSLA also partners and collaborates with districts that have their own vision for developing teacher leaders.
Muscogee County School District (MCSD) Superintendent David Lewis had a clear vision to build an internal leadership program specifically for teacher leaders in his district to address retention of and leadership opportunities for teachers in the district. In 2019, GSLA began conversations about strategies to develop a district model for teacher leadership. Early planning included outlining program goals and outcomes, identifying key personnel at the district-level and GSLA to support the work, creating a vision of program components, and discussing the needed collaborative efforts between GSLA and the district. Work was interrupted as the district's response to COVID took priority, but the commitment to the work never wavered.

SubsIcnrifbalel of 202P1,atshteIsMsuusecsogee Teacher Academy Design Team, under the leadership of Lorrie WTarattn, slate Development Coordinator, and Instructor, MCSD Teacher Leader Program, resumed working with GSLA to begin the program design and development process. This process began by assembling a diverse team of central office leaders to engage and commit to an ongoing iterative planning process that supported defining teacher leadership and developing a comprehensive program to implement within the following year. The Muscogee Teacher Academy Design Team met regularly to examine GSLA Teacher Leader training content and design a program that aligned with their system goals. Through careful reflection and consideration of the needs across the district, the Muscogee Teacher Academy Design Team was able to use the GSLA Teacher Leader program to provide a framework for their program, use the available GSLA resources, and customize the program components to align with their vision and needs.
Fast forward to June 2022, Muscogee County School District commenced their two-year long Teacher Leader Academy program with their inaugural cohort of 27 teacher leaders representing 20 schools across the district. During the 2022-2023 school year, participants will engage in monthly professional learning and receive mentor support to explore teacher leadership pathways and refine essential leadership skills. During the second year of the cohort, participants will apply their knowledge and skills to address a specific need within the district.
"The Muscogee County School District has spent the last few years developing our Teacher Leader program in order to provide opportunities for teachers who are already proven leaders. We recognized a need to keep good leaders in the classrooms and build capacity within our schools. We look forward to this upcoming year during which formally trained teacher leaders will put their new found skills to work to benefit the District as a whole. School administrators can't do it alone."
-- Dr. David Lewis, Superintendent of Education, Muscogee County School District.
