DECEMBER, 2021
Dear Partners, Colleagues and Friends,
The Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) celebrates another year of meeting its strategic goals of partnering with state agencies and education organizations to support improvements in Georgia's public schools. GOSA's partnerships through the Governor's School Leadership Academy (GSLA) are impacting student success by providing teachers and leaders with tools and resources to support students in school and in virtual environments. This year, GSLA partnered with the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL) to provide coaching to educators participating in GAEL's aspiring principals program.
Through Growing Readers, GOSA has established partnerships with the RESA Network, the Georgia Department of Education and local school districts to support students since 2015. This year, we are excited to add Atlanta Speech School's Cox Campus as a literacy partner. Growing Readers is training teachers on best practices in reading instruction for K-3 students. In its sixth year of evaluation, our RESA partners are successfully collaborating and delivering consistent, effective professional learning in K-3 literacy instruction to teachers in districts all over Georgia.

GOSA is committed to aligning and leveraging partnerships for additional impact. During this Thanksgiving and holiday season, I am personally thankful for GOSA's passionate and committed staff members, our many amazing partners, Governor Brian Kemp's guidance, legislative support, and our ability to serve educators and students in all parts of the state.

On behalf of GOSA, I wish you a happy and safe holiday season and a blessed 2022!

Governor's Honors Program Featured in the December Georgia Trend Georgia educators from all parts of the state nominated students for GHP's 2022 summer residential program in record numbers. The 3,200 rising high school juniors and seniors nominated represent school systems that traditionally nominate students and also those small, rural districts who have not nominated in the past three 10+ years. The next step in this process calls for those nominated students who would like to advance to fill out the online application form and required essays by the Jan. 3 deadline. Semifinalists will then be named and interviewed in February. GOSA appreciates educators taking time to complete information nominating students to GHP who are passionate about issues/subjects both in and out of school. GOSA will keep newsletter readers updated about student selections for the GHP 2022 program.

Students attending the 2022 program will have the opportunity to participate in a cybersecurity and computer science course. These courses are the first to align with specific state industry needs. The December 2021 Georgia Trend featured article is about GHP, the 2022 cybersecurity and computer science pilot courses and the many ways Georgia's brightest and most talented students benefit from the innovative residential summer program.

Georgia Library Association (GLA) Joy Hawkins recently participated in the GLA's strategic planning session. Librarians, library staff and stakeholders participated in a day of planning for upcoming years of service. Libraries have historically been the center of communities, providing computers, books and resources free of charge. During the pandemic, libraries provided drive-up internet services keeping students learning and employees working. Our economy prospered from these services, especially during the pandemic, and GOSA recognizes the important role libraries continue to serve in Georgia's communities.

University System of Georgia (USG) Reports Increases in Graduation Rates USG's efforts to ensure students who begin a degree at one of its 26 institutions complete their studies on time are proving successful, according to a new analysis in the USG system enrollment report.

The four-year graduation rate at USG institutions has increased by 20% from 31.1% in 2017 to 37.3% in 2021. The increase in the four-year graduation rate is even more dramatic for African American students. The rate for African American students increased by 29% from 18.7% in 2017 to 24.2% on 2021. And highest by far is the increase in the four-year graduation rate for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) growing by 50% from 11.5% in 2017 to 17.3% in 2021. These increases are emblematic of increases at every institution in every sector.

These numbers come on the heels of another record-breaking degrees-awarded report in August for fiscal year 2021. Last fiscal year, USG institutions granted an all-time high of 72,929 degrees, an annual increase over fiscal year 2020 of 2,050 degrees or 3%.

Much of these gains can be directly attributed to the efforts of the Momentum Year initiative. Momentum Year is a suite of strategies designed to help University System of Georgia students in their crucial first year of college that are being utilized at all USG institutions. Those strategies include starting college by making a purposeful choice in a focus area or major, developing a productive academic mindset and
