June 2017 Monthly Update
GOSA Releases Education Update on Data Dashboard Resources
The GOSA Data Dashboards provide stakeholders, educators, parents, and students with data on Georgia public K-12 schools, technical colleges, and colleges/universities. Each dashboard provides a unique, interactive view of Georgia public education, such as details on how high school students fare after graduation, the median salaries of technical college and college/university graduates, and how schools with similar characteristics compare academically.
The data dashboards include:
Georgia School Reports: Concise school reports for all Georgia public elementary, middle, and high schools and school districts based on school performance, statewide assessments, demographics, graduation rate, and other academic information. Georgia Higher Learning and Earnings: Provides information on earnings for Georgia technical college and college/university graduates who work in Georgia for the first and fifth years after graduation. High School Graduate Outcomes: Provides information on the paths that public high school graduates take after graduation. Schools like Mine: Allows parents, educators, and community members to find schools with similar student populations to their school. Interactive Education Data Map: Displays district-level data on student mobility, student demographics, standardized test performance, CCRPI scores, and community demographics.

GOSA Releases Education Update on Project Lead the Way in Southwest Georgia
On June 19, GOSA published an education update providing an overview of the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) grant opportunity in Southwest Georgia. PLTW is a national nonprofit organization that aims to promote real world, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education for K-12 students. In 2015, GOSA announced an Innovation Fund grant opportunity for schools in Southwest Georgia to implement PLTW's K-12 pathways for students.
GOSA aimed to target highneed, rural areas in Georgia that lacked the infrastructure for implementing high-quality STEM education for students. During the 2016-2017 school year, 59 schools were selected to comprise the first cohort of PLTW schools.
Schools can participate in five different pathways through PLTW:
- Launch (K-5) - Gateway (6-8) - Computer Science (9-12) - Engineering (9-12) - Biomedical Science (9-12)

Rhetorical Analysis: A Blended Learning Unit
The Innovation in Teaching Competition recognizes and awards Georgia educators who are using innovative strategies to advance student achievement. McClarin Success Academy's Farhat Ahmad teaches his students how to use rhetorical analysis to analyze speeches and texts in this blended learning unit. Throughout the unit, students engage with political cartoons, famous speeches from American history, and popular culture to develop an understanding of rhetorical analysis. The unit concludes with students writing a rhetorical analysis of their own.
