Innovation in Teaching Spotlight
Debi Goodman-Shallowford Falls Elementary
Exploring STEM Through Stuffed Animals
The Innovation in Teaching Competition recognizes and awards Georgia educators who are using innovative strategies to advance student achievement. Debi Goodman of Shallowford Falls Elementary in Cobb County combines fun and learning in her kindergarten class. In her unit "Exploring STEM Through Stuffed Animals," Ms. Goodman integrates Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, and stuffed animals to teach students how to think critically and work collaboratively. Using their own stuffed animals, kindergarteners learn how to compare, contrast, and categorize based on animal characteristics. The unit culminates into the "Can You Guess My Animal" project, where students use their animal's characteristics to create a riddle, as well as engineer a pen for the animal to live in.
