Innovation in Teaching Competition Round Five Winners
On January 6, 2014, Governor Nathan Deal announced five winners in the fifth round of the Innovation in Teaching Competition. The competition, a recognition and reward opportunity for teachers who demonstrate innovative teaching strategies for the Georgia standards in English/Language Arts and Mathematics, is available through Georgia's Innovation Fund, a competitive grant program. Round five focused on rewarding innovative secondary and special education teachers.
Each winning teacher will receive a $2,000 stipend, and each teacher's school will receive a $5,000 grant for implementation of Georgia's instructional standards. In addition, Georgia Public Broadcasting will film the winning educators teaching in their classrooms during the 2014-2015 school year, as well as interview them about how they prepared the featured units.
The five winners in round five, along with the grade level and subject area(s) of each winning unit, are listed below.
Ashley Bailey Sixth Grade, Mathematics Bear Creek Middle School Barrow County Schools
Debbie Chrzanowski Kindergarten, Special Education, English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science Baker Elementary School Cobb County School District
Melanie Hartfield Fifth Grade, Special Education, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies Unity Grove Elementary School Henry County Schools
Jerry Knox 10th-12th Grades, Mathematics and Science Academy of Richmond County Richmond County School System

The Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) strives to increase student achievement and school completion across Georgia through meaningful, transparent, and objective analysis and communication of statewide data. In addition, GOSA provides policy support to the Governor and, ultimately, to the citizens of Georgia.

January E-Bulletin: Real STEM Program
Beginning in 2012, Georgia Southern University's Research and Service Foundation partnered with research institutes and school districts in southeast Georgia to develop hands-on STEM learning modules that explore the environmental issues facing the state's lower coastal plain. The Real STEM program aims to reignite student interest in STEM, boost STEM achievement, and promote STEM careers.
Sponsored by GOSA's Innovation Fund, Real STEM recently received additional funds for an expansion to five more school districts.

GOSA Releases 20132014 Report Card
The 2013-2014 Report Card is now available. As part of its mission, GOSA presents its annual report on Georgia's public education agencies. These reports provide educators, parents, students, and all stakeholders with valuable information on the characteristics and performance of Georgia's public schools.
