January E-Bulletin: A Snapshot of High School Academic Achievement in Georgia
This month's e-bulletin focuses on Georgia's performance on high school standardized tests from 2009-10 to 2012-13. Georgia students' performance on the End-of-Course Tests (EOCT) has generally improved during that time. However, on national tests, such as the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the ACT, Georgia students' scores still trail the national average and indicate that roughly three-quarters of test takers are not prepared for college. To provide a more accurate picture of students' college and career readiness, Georgia should align its assessments with national measures to ensure its expectations align with all students nationally.

The Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) strives to increase student achievement and school completion across Georgia through meaningful, transparent, and objective analysis and communication of statewide data. In addition, GOSA provides policy support to the Governor and, ultimately, to the citizens of Georgia.
Guide for Summer Learning Programs
Based on the success of the Savannah Reading on Grade Level Program, GOSA prepared a guide for school districts to develop a summer learning program for struggling readers. Doing so will help students achieve at higher levels during the regular school year and better equip districts to increase the number of children reading on grade level by the end of third grade.

Education Week Releases Annual Quality Counts Report
Georgia earned an "A" in Transitions and Alignment, ranking 1st in the nation, because of its focus on collaboration and alignment of education agencies and policies from early childhood through the workforce. In other categories, Georgia earned the following rankings and grades:
10th in The Teaching Profession with a grade of "B-" 17th in K-12 Achievement with a grade of "C-" 18th in Standards, Assessments, and Accountability with a grade of "A-" 31st in School Finance Analysis with a "C-" 38th in Chances for Success with a grade of "C"
