April 2013 Monthly Update
2013 Legislative Session ends; Two bills have impact on GOSA
This year, legislators passed two bills related to GOSA's work.
HB 283
Allows GOSA to create a 501(c)3 for the purpose of sustaining the Race to the Top Innovation Fund through private donations. Provides GOSA with the responsibility of determining a list of low-performing schools that will be used to determine student eligibility for scholarships to private K-12 schools through a student scholarship organization (SSO).
HB 244
Allows GaDOE to share data from the new statewide teacher evaluation system with GOSA for the purpose of improving postsecondary education preparation.

The Governor's Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) strives to increase student achievement and school completion across Georgia through meaningful, transparent, and objective analysis and communication of statewide data. In addition, GOSA provides policy support to the Governor and, ultimately, to the citizens of Georgia.
E-Bulletin: Georgia Pre-K: Investing in Georgia's Four-YearOld Students
Over the last decade, Georgia Pre-K has expanded to serve more than 60% of the state's four-year old population. In addition, nearly 60% of the students it serves are considered "atrisk." A recently published evaluation shows that Pre-K students make statistically significant gains in language and literacy, mathematics, basic self-knowledge, and behavioral/social skills, outpacing normal developmental growth, even though the report also found that classroom practice, environment, and teacherstudent interactions are of mid-level quality. As such, the Georgia Pre-K program provides an important foundation for Georgia students.

Gov. Deal declares May 3rd as Georgia STEM Day
Gov. Deal recently signed a proclamation that May 3rd will be Georgia STEM Day to recognize the importance of STEM education for Georgia's competitiveness and workforce development. The Technology Association of Georgia's Education Collaborative (TAG-Ed) is taking the lead on STEM Day activities. For more information on how to participate, click here.
Race to the Top Evaluation Update: CCGPS Implementation
Last winter, GOSA surveyed district, RESA, and GaDOE curriculum support personnel to assess how they are supporting teachers' implementation of CCGPS standards. The final report will be released soon. In addition, in late spring, GOSA will administer a survey to a random sample of teachers statewide that will assess their understanding of CCGPS as well as their opinion of district and state supports.
