Georgia's State Art Collection Featured on New Website
Atlanta Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA) is pleased to announce the launch of the official Website for Georgia's State Art Collection. A brief public viewing has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at 3:30 p.m. in the North Wing of the State Capitol. Invited guests include the Honorable Sonny Perdue, State Legislators and many of the artists responsible for creating the artworks featured in the collection and highlighted on the Website.
GCA is home to an eclectic and valuable collection of art created by Georgians in a variety of media such as paintings, sculpture, and photography. These works are a state asset under the management of the agency and on display throughout the gallery halls of the Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) building, the office location of GCA. More than 500 pieces have been researched, identified, digitized and catalogued. The artists include world-renowned names such as Benny Andrews, Lamar Dodd, Edward Moulthrop, and Howard Finster. "A collection such as this must be shared with its owners, the citizens of Georgia," states Susan S. Weiner, GCA Executive Director. "For more than two years, GCA has worked with GPB to design, develop and create a dedicated Website for these artworks. We are extremely proud to introduce the finished product to the public and honor those artists whose creative energies have contributed to such an impressive collection."
The Website features art in various media and presents exhibit histories and biographical information about the artists. Educators may also download lesson plans for classroom instruction based on the artwork. Additionally, under the direction of the GCA Advisory Board, the State Art Collection Docents Program has been established, and will provide tours of the collection by appointment through the gallery halls at Georgia Public Broadcasting.
