Governor Perdue Requests Nominations for State Poet Laureate
Atlanta Governor Sonny Perdue is seeking nominations for the position of the Poet Laureate of Georgia. As both a state citizen and a distinguished poet, the Poet Laureate shall represent and celebrate the diversity and history of Georgia. The appointee will serve for a term of office concurrent with the term of office of the Governor or until a successor is appointed. The position is honorary, receiving no remuneration. Nominations may come from any Georgia nonprofit organization or resident; self-nominations will not be accepted.
The Georgia Council for the Arts, with support from the Georgia Humanities Council, spearheads the nomination process, and assembles a Poet Laureate Review Committee that will forward three nominees to the Governor for his final selection of the Georgia Poet Laureate.
The Poet Laureate must be a resident of the State of Georgia with at least five years of concurrent residency, available to travel throughout the state, and is a recognized and published poet who meets the established criteria. Nominations must be mailed with a postmark date no later than May 16 or hand-delivered no later than 4:45 p.m. on that date to: Poet Laureate Review Committee, Georgia Council for the Arts, 260 14th Street, 4th Floor, Atlanta, Georgia 30318. Faxed nominations will not be reviewed.
The Georgia Council for the Arts is a state agency that provides support for nonprofit arts and cultural organizations throughout the state. Established in 1965 as the Georgia Commission on the Arts, GCA's mission is to encourage excellence in the arts, support the arts many forms of expression and make the arts available to all Georgians by providing funding, leadership, programming and other services.
