for board members, donors, colleagues, friends or loved ones? Please consider "Inspired Georgia." This project was born of a collaboration between Georgia Council for the Arts, Georgia Poet Laureate Judson Mitcham, Atlanta Celebrates Photography (ACP) and UGA Press. The volume is a unique collection of Georgia's contemporary poets and photographers that engages the history and culture of the state, while serving as a document of some of the best and most powerful pieces penned by Georgia poets and images shot by Georgia photographers in recent years. Proceeds from the sale of the book will fund future UGA Press and GCA co-publications celebrating the arts in Georgia. Purchase your copy of the book here. And, if you missed the "Inspired Georgia" event at ACP this fall, we are pleased to announce that the exhibit will begin touring the state in the summer of 2017 and will serve as a host for literary events in each community. To date, exhibit venues have been confirmed in Albany, Rome, Zebulon and Milledgeville. Complete "Inspired Georgia" tour details will be shared after the new year.

GCA Introduces Council Members

In an effort to help GCA constituents get to know our Council members, each newsletter will feature a brief Q&A with two or three members of the Council. This month we are featuring Council Chair Barry Schrenk, and Council members David Morrow and John White.

Tell us about yourself in a few short sentences: I own Taggart's Driving School, which is headquartered in Tucker. Our business provides teenage driver education programs at our locations, as well as at several private schools and schools systems in metro Atlanta. We also provide driving lessons for adults, offer services for senior citizens, teach driver improvement courses, and manage DUI risk reduction programs. My interests include service on arts and cultural boards of directors and on the board of the Tucker/Northlake Community Improvement District. For over 30 years I have represented our driving school association at the state Capitol as a registered lobbyist. I enjoy regular long walks, golf, riding my bicycle, and attending arts and cultural events.

Earliest personal memory of an impactful experience in the arts: My first memories of impactful experiences in the arts include a visit when I was in fifth grade to a museum that had an exhibition of paintings from Vincent van Gogh, which really impressed me. Other early experiences were listening to opera playing on the radio or on a record player when visiting the home of friends, in addition to listening to classical music at home. I was very impressed with the singers and the music that I heard. I also remember visiting museums as a small child with my parents and listening to explanations from my father about any of the objects that we were viewing.
What is your message for supporting the arts: My message regarding the arts is as follows: If possible, introduce your children as early as possible to the variety of arts and cultural opportunities available in our great state, including opportunities on public television. There is a strong possibility that an early introduction will remain and last a lifetime for a

child. Work is required by most to exist, but the value found in the arts will make your lifetime much more interesting and enjoyable.

David Morrow
Atlanta, GA
Tell us about yourself in a few short sentences: I am the director of the Morehouse College Glee Club and Professor in the Music Department. I have been involved in music almost all of my life, from school, to church, to community chorus singing and conducting, professional chorus conducting and more.
Earliest personal memory of an impactful experience in the arts: I am from Rochester, New York. which is the home of the famous Eastman School of Music. I was fortunate enough to have taken piano lessons and to be able to read music at a fairly young age. Each year the choral teachers at our public schools could take students as a field trip to The Eastman Theater to hear the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra perform a concert. You had to be selected by your teacher and prepared about the music, as well as about concert etiquette. I got to see and hear one of the finest orchestras in the country and watch their conductors.

Program Grants. GCA seeks to develop panels which are diverse based on where in the state panelists reside, the artistic disciplines in which they have expertise, the type of organizations for which they work, etc. GCA is especially interested in recruiting panelists who live outside of the metro Atlanta area. If you are interested in serving as a grant panelist, please send a short bio or resume to Tina Lilly at tlilly@gaarts.org.

GCA Project Grant and Arts Education Program Grant final reports are now available in GO. To access the online final report form, grantees should log-in to their GO account. The final report deadline is 30 days after the completion of the funded program or project.

South Arts has a number of grants available to Georgia arts organizations, including the Traditional Arts Touring Grant Program, Regional Touring Performing Arts and Block-Booked Grants, and Literary Arts Touring Grants. Deadlines, requirements, and funding amounts for South Arts grants vary. Click the relevant links above for more details.

Learning how to listen and what to listen for in those concerts I am sure influenced me to pursue a career including classical music.
What is your message for supporting the arts: I firmly believe that we must deal with the wholeness of being a human being. The arts not only show the creative side of our being, but they give us a chance to explore and express our humanity and learn about culture in a more tangible and unforgettable way. Following that as practice makes it more comfortable to embrace each other as similar or different, yet culturally and historically connectable. Diminishing the value of the arts to entertainment only is fallacious, foolish, and certainly less human.

DeKalb County, GA
Tell us about yourself in a few short sentences: A retired executive of The Coca-Cola Company and now a Senior Consultant to the Company. A member and Secretary of the Board of Directors of The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, a member of the Board of Public Broadcasting Atlanta, and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Born in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

As part of the NEA's 50th anniversary, the agency launched the leadership initiative Creativity Connects. This initiative shows how the arts contribute to the nation's creative ecosystem, examines the ways in which the support systems for artists are changing, and explores how the arts can connect with other sectors that utilize creativity. Creativity Connects has three components: a report that investigates the current conditions for artists, a pilot grant opportunity, and an interactive digital graphic.

In its ongoing commitment to producing resources for community engagement with the arts, the NEA has published How to Do Creative Placemaking: An Action-Oriented Guide to Arts in Community Development. The book features essays from thought leaders active in arts-based community development and case studies of projects funded through Our

Earliest personal memory of an impactful experience in the arts: While in elementary school, I attended a performance of the Philadelphia Orchestra, on tour in Columbus.
What is your message for supporting the arts: The arts add meaning and purpose to life. What dull existence we would have without the music and the visual and performing arts. The late Robert Shaw has said it best: "The Arts are not simply skills: Their concern is the intellectual, ethical and spiritual maturity of human life. The Arts have become the custodians of those values which most worthily define humanity..."
