New Elementary and Secondary Education Act Signed into Law
The reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was signed into law on Thursday of last week. Known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the new law replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Americans for the Arts staff has written a detailed analysis of what the legislation means for arts education. The arts are included in the act's definition of a "well-rounded education;" funding is specified for arts education grants, after school programs, and teacher professional development; and policy changes provide the opportunity to improve data collection, expand the arts in early learning, and support STEAM programs, while relaxing the pressures of high-stakes testing. A number of these issues were addressed in the recommendations made by the Governor's Arts Learning Task Force and will continue to receive attention as GCA works with our state partners to implement the policy recommendations made by the Task Force.
