By the Governor of the State of Georgia, a proclamation, 2016 September 15

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS:
WHEREAS : WHEREAS: THEREFORE:

A PROCLAMATION
GIRLS IN AVIATION DAY
The United States is recognized as the global leader in aerospace safety, efficiency, and innovation; and
Safe and efficient air transportation for people and goods is now an essential aspect of fostering the economic prosperity, national security, and citizen safety. The aerospace industry is dependent upon a skilled workforce to maintain this exemplary level of quality; and
Women have been involved in aviation since its earliest days, from E. Lillian Todd, who designed and built aircraft in 1906, to Harriet Quimby who became the first woman to earn a pilot certificate and cross the English Channel in 1911, to Helen Richey who became the first woman pilot for a U.S. commercial airline in 1934, to astronaut Dr. Sally Ride who became the first Americ_an woman in space in 1983, to jeana Yeager who co-piloted the first non-stop, non-refueled flight around the world in 1986, to astronaut Eileen Collins, who became the first female Space Shuttle Pilot in 1997 and the first female Space Shuttle Commander in 1999; and
In the last two decades, the overall number of women involved in the aviation industry has steadily increased. However, currently only 16 percent of people currently working in the aircraft, spacecraft, and manufacturing industry are female; and
Female participation in the aerospace industry can be increased by the efforts of dedicated organizations that encourage girls to pursue goals in aviation, prepare female students through advocating for strong STEM curriculums, and expose girls to positive female role models; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim September 24, 2016, as GIRLS IN AVIATION DAY in Georgia.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 15th day of September in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
