BY THE GOVE RNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

SICKLE CELL AWAREN ESS MONTH

WHEREAS :

Sickle Cell Disease is a devastating illness affecting thousands of people in our state and across the nation; and

WHEREAS:

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) affects people of various racial and ethnic groups. In the U.S. approximately 100,000 people, mainly African Americans, have SCD; and

WHEREAS: There are approximately 7,300 Georgians who suffer from SCD; and

WHEREAS:

The Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia has served our state for more than 45 years and provides education, counseling, and screenings for those affected with Sickle Cell Disease and other abnormal hemoglobin's; now

THEREFORE :

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governo r of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim September 2016 as SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 1st day of August in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen .
