BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

POW/M IA RECOGN ITION WEEK

WHEREAS:

Over 1,600 American military personnel are still missing from the Vietnam War, nearly 8,000 are unaccounted for from the Korean War, 126 from the Cold War, and approximately 73,000 from World War II. Georgia's men and women have long served with honor and distinction in our nation's Armed Forces. Preserving America's freedom and ideals, they often risk- and many have given- their lives on the battlefield; and

WHEREAS:

According to records from the National Archives and Records Administration, the Department of Defense, and Georgia Historical Data from the Revolutionary War to present day, over 18,800 Georgians have been held as prisoners of war at some point in time, with more than 2,630 having died in captivity and over 1,400 still unaccounted for; and

WHEREAS :

During National POWI MIA Recognition Week, we acknowledge with deep respect the brave
Americans who were held in captivity and those whose fates have never been resolved, remembering that their families continue to suffer; and

WHEREAS:

While serving their nation, American prisoners of war suffered the indignities and brutality of captivity, and many remain unaccounted for and are considered missing in action. Georgia fully commends and endorses the national commitment to account for those still missing from our nation's wars; and

WHEREAS:

During the week of September 11 - 17, 2016 , we pause to remember former American prisoners of war who suffered the hardships of enemy captivity and those missing in action whose fate is still undetermined ; now

THEREFORE:

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim September 11-1 7, 2016, as POW / MIA RECOGNITION WEEK in Georgia in honor of those Georgians who became prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action, encouraging our citizens to fly the POW/MIA Flag as a tribute .

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 1st day of August in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
