BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

NATIVE AMERICAN FAMILIES OF THE OHOOPEE RIVER WEEK

WHEREAS:

For thousands of years, Native Americans and their descendants have lived in the Ohoopee River area, making significant contributions to the formation and advancement of Georgia and the United States . Native Americans have served hono rably in each of the American wars and aided in the advancement of occupations such as agriculture and fishing, science, medicine, and manufacturing; and
The families who make up the Society of Ohoopee River Indians descend from one of the oldest lines of Native American Siouan Indians in North America, with their population movements dating back more than 1 5,000 years; and
Members of the Society of Ohoopee River Indians continue to honor and recognize the history and achievements of their ancestors through reunions , historical writings , grave preservation, teaching and more ; and
Georgia joins in celebrating the ancestral traditions of the Society of Ohoopee River Indians and recognizes their efforts to preserve Native American culture and history, as well as honoring the service, sacrifices , and hard work of generations of their ancestors; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim August 7- 1 3, 2016 as NATIVE AMERICAN FAMILIES OF THE OHOOPEE RIVER WEEK in Georgia.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 12th day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
