A PROCLAMATION
X & Y CHROMOSOME VARIATIONS
AWARENESS MONTH

X & Y chromosome disorders are common but frequently undiagnosed genetic conditions that differ from the normal chromosome 23 pairings of XX for females and XY for males. Due to a chromosome mistake that produces additional X or Y chromosomes to the normal complement of 46, the resulting total of 47 or more chromosomes may impact a child's developing central nervous system and his or her body condition; and
One in 500 children in the U.S. has an X & Y chromosome variation that may cause complex learning disabilities, including language impairment, motor planning deficits, readying dysfunction, and attention and behavioral disorders; and
Although health care professionals are taught that genetics anomalies can impact a child's development, more education about X & Y chromosome variations is needed due to widespread misinformation about X & Y chromosome variations, causing unnecessary distress to families dealing with such a diagnosis; and
With increased awareness about the existence of X & Y chromosome variations, children with these disorders can be better diagnosed and provided with the medical care they need; and
Emory Healthcare and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta are in the initial stages of planning the eXtraordinarY Kids Clinic of Atlanta to establish a regional center of expertise to serve patients and families in Georgia and the surrounding states. Emory University will also host "Advances & Innovations in Collaborative Research in Fragile X, Autism, and Sex Chromosome Variations: Working Toward Patient Centered Outcomes" in August to increase research efforts for better outcomes for patients; now

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 2016 as X & Y Chromosome Variations Awareness Month in Georgia.
