A proclamation: Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month [Apr. 19, 2016C]

A PROCLAMATION
MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY AWARENESS MONTH
Muscular dystrophy is not a single disease or disorder that affects everyone in the same way, but an umbrella term encompassing more than nine types of muscular diseases and 43 types neuromuscular diseases, which range in severity; and
All muscular dystrophies result in progressive muscle weakness, ranging from mild muscle weakness to complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles, including those used for breathing and swallowing; and
More than one million individuals in the United States are affected by one form of muscular dystrophy. These diseases can effect anyone, regardless of race, sex, age, or ethnicity; and
There are new drugs expected in the coming years that will help find a cure for neuromuscular diseases; and
Raising public awareness of these diseases will continue to facilitate the discovery of treatments and cures, as well as bringing much needed funding for support and services for families affected by muscular dystrophy and neuromuscular diseases; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim August 2016 as MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia and join in recognizing LIGHT IT UP GREEN FOR MD MONTH.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 19th day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
