A proclamation: Safe Digging Month [Mar. 21, 2016D]

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

SAFE DIGGING MONTH

WHEREAS:

Each year in Georgia, lives are endangered, money and time are wasted, and property is destroyed because people fail to follow safe digging practices as prescribed by the national Safe Digging campaign; and

WHEREAS:

Georgia piloted the national Safe Digging campaign, and the state's one call center continues to motivate statewide excavators with the message: "Know What's Below, Call Before You Dig;" and

WHEREAS:

Georgia 811 - the Utilities Protection Center - provides a toll-free telephone number, 1-800-282-7411, and accepts calls from the national, federally mandated "Call Before You Dig" Number, 811, to help reduce damages to underground facilities, thereby reducing the loss of time and money to contractors, utilities, and taxpayers; and

WHEREAS:

This "one call" system, which is free to the contractor as well as the homeowner, also helps diggers comply with the safety rules and regulations of the construction industry; now

THEREFORE:

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 2016 as SAFE DIGGING MONTH in Georgia.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 21st day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
