TARTAN DAY
The Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed on April 6, 1320; and
Scottish Americans have played a significant role in shaping our nation. Many of the signers of our own Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent and nine of the original thirteen colonial governors were of Scottish ancestry; and
Generations of Scottish Americans have made valuable contributions to our state and national heritage in the fields of science, architecture, medicine, government, politics, economics, literature, and the performing arts; and
Many Georgians of Scottish ancestry are dedicated to perpetuating Scottish traditions, culture and heritage as well as promoting fellowship and dispensing charitable and educational assistance; and
The State of Georgia has a rich history filled with the character and strength of a beautifully diverse population, including Scots and Scots-Irish; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 6, 2016, as TARTAN DAY in Georgia, saluting the contributions to our state and nation of all Americans with Scottish heritage.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 17th day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
