A proclamation: Syringomyelia Awareness Month, Feb. 9, 2016

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

SYRINGOMYELIA AWARENESS MONTH

WHEREAS:

First discovered in 1803, Syringomyelia, also known as SM, is a chronic spinal and neurological progressive disease of the spinal cord. There are two major types of SM: Chiari Malformation which occurs during fetal development and trauma in which symptoms can occur many years later; and

WHEREAS:

Syringomyelia occurs when fluid found outside the spinal cord and brain enters the interior spinal cord forming a cavity known as syrinx. Over time, this disorder can cause damage to the spinal cord, neurological issues, severe pain, and serious disabling symptoms; and

WHEREAS:

Thousands of .men, women , and children throughout the nation have suffe red the widespread physical symptoms associated with Syringomyelia; and

WHEREAS :

There is currently only limited treatment and no cure for patients with this disease as well as a lack of knowledge in the general public and medical community; and

WHEREAS:

It is imperative that we increase awareness of this disease in order to improve the quality of life for all those who struggle with this debilitating disorder; now

THEREFORE :

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 2016 , as SYRINGOMYELIA AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia.

In witness thereof, I have here unto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 9th day of February in the yea r of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
