BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
A PROCLAMATION
READ ACROSS GEORGIA MONTH
WHEREAS:
The State of Georgia is committed to ensuring that all students learn to read well and independently, thereby allowing them to be successful in future academic endeavors; and
WHEREAS:
Students' reading and literacy abilities can be improved and enhanced by increased parental involvement in teaching these skills through activities such as reading stories aloud to young children every day; and
WHEREAS:
During the month of March, schools in our state will participate in the Read Across Georgia initiative. First Lady Sandra Deal and others will visit schools all over the state to promote literacy in the classroom, furthering Mrs. Deal's goal of reading to a school in all 180 of Georgia's school districts during her husband's time in office; and
WHEREAS:
It is imperative that we increase the percentage of children reading well and independently at grade-level as this lays the ground work for all of their future academic and career endeavors. Volunteering with a servant's heart in programs that help to build and strengthen literacy in students can have a lasting impact on the families and communities of Georgia; and
WHEREAS:
Children are Georgia's most precious resource. It is a priority that we invest in their future, thereby securing the next leaders of our state; now
THEREFORE:
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim March 2016 as READ ACROSS GEORGIA MONTH and urge every Georgian to make time to read to a child today.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal ofthe State of Georgia to be affixed this 24th day of February in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
