BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

WHEREAS:

Approximately 29 .1 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes, 8.1 million of whom are undiagnosed. Sadly, this difficult and chronic condition is the immediate or underlying cause of many deaths throughout the country; and

WHEREAS :

Diabetes can cause serious complications , including heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and blindness. Type 1 diab etes, often diagnosed in children, limits insulin product ion and its causes are not well defined . Type 2 diabetes , which accounts for more than 90 percent ofdiabetes cases , has been linked to older age and family history, although it is also associated with obesity and inactivity in younger individuals; and

WHEREAS:

More than one million Georgians are estimated to have diabetes, and the total economic cost to ou r state is significant. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in our state, killing more than 1,000 Georgians per year; and

WHEREAS:

Our state is committed to improving the health of our citizens , offering assistance , and providing opportunities to achieve a greater level of overall health . An increase in community awareness of risk factors and the symptoms related to diabetes can improve t he likelihood that those afflicted with diabetes will get the attention they need; now

THEREFORE:

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim November 201 6, as DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Ex ecutive Department to be affixed this 4th day of November in the year of our Lord two tho us and sixteen.
