A PROCLAMATION

PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS DAY

In 2016, an estimated 53,070 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the U.S., 41,780 will die from the disease, and approximately 1,090 of those deaths will occur in Georgia; and
Pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancers, is currently the third leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. It is projected to become the second by 2020. It is the only major cancer with a five year relative survival rate at seven percent; and
71 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year of their diagnosis and it is the only major cancer with a five-year relative survival rate in the single digits, at just eight percent; and
Pancreatic cancer is the seventh most common cause of cancer related death in men and women across the world; and
The health and well - being of the citizens of Georgia are enhanced as a result of increased awareness of pancreatic cancer and research into early detection, causes, and effective treatments; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim November 17, 2016, as PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS DAY in Georgia.
