BY T HE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

STROKE AWARENESS DAY

WHEREAS:

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, and the fourth leading cause of death in Georgia; and

WHEREAS:

Each year , roughly 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 610 ,000 of these incidents are first or new strokes, and 185,000 are recurrent strokes; and

WHEREAS:

The efforts of various organizations around our state, including the Georgia Stroke Professional Alliance, have made major contributions to spreading community awareness about the signs and symptoms of stroke and how to respond to this emergency through outreach, education, and screening programs , empowering the community with the lifesaving F.A.S.T. message of early detection as well as the importance of calling 911 and activating the emergency response system; and

WHEREAS:

Stroke Prevention and Community Awareness has become an opportunity to unite all citizens of Georgia in an effort t o prevent stroke deaths t h rough increased education and regular health screenings; now

THEREFORE :

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim October 29, 2016, as STROI<E AWARENESS DAY in Georgia.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 3rd day of October in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen .
