BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
A PROCLAMATION
PRESSURE INJURY PREVENTION DAY
WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: THEREFORE:
Pressure injuries, often known as bed sores, are areas of damaged skin that occur from prolonged stagnation. Bedsores are responsible for the deaths of more than 60,000 people each year and cost the U.S. healthcare system more than $11 billion annually; and
The symptoms of bedsores vary depending on the extent of tissue damage and the severity of the injury. They are classified in four stages and by stage three, bedsores may extend into the tissue and lead to life threatening ulcers; and
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services note that no other preventable injuries occur as frequently as those which are pressure-related. The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel is dedicated to the prevention and management of pressure injuries; and
We encourage all health care providers, patients, and educational institutions to help increase awareness of pressure related injuries, in hopes of early and correct diagnosis and treatment, and to offer information, support, and comfort to those victims of this dis ease and their loved ones; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim November 17, 2016, as PRESSURE INJURY PREVENTION DAY in Georgia.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 21st day of October in the year of our Lord two thousand sixteen.
