A PROCLAMATION
SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK

Each year Georgians face the threat of severe weather events such as lightning, thunderstorms, floods, hailstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, and various winter storms, all potentially dangerous to life, health, and property; and
Urbanization and continued population growth increases the potential for these storms to cause death and destruction; and
In 2015, severe weather events in Georgia included snow and ice events, tornado events, flooding events and strong storms with high winds throughout the state; and
Severe weather events in Georgia have injured and killed numerous people and caused substantial property damage; and
It is critical that effective public education programs concerning severe weather systems and preparedness procedures continue for the benefit of all Georgians; and
Departments and agencies of the local, state, and federal governments, along with volunteer and professional associations, faith;-based organizations, the private sector, elected leaders, and news media, are committed to informing Georgia citizens about safety and severe weather preparedness procedures so that they may better protect themselves, their families, and their fellow citizens; and
The State of Georgia launched "Ready Georgia," a public awareness campaign to help Georgia's citizens understand the importance of emergency preparedness and provide them with the tools necessary to be prepared in the event of weather-related or other types of emergencies; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim the week of February 1- 5, 2016 , as SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS WEEK in Georgia and encourage our citizens to become more aware of severe weather safety measures and to participate in the various awareness programs scheduled during the week, such as Family Preparedness Day on Monday, February 1, Ready Georgia's PrepreAthon! for Tornado Safety on Wednesday, February 3, and by downloading the Ready Georgia mobile app.
