GEORGIA SHAPE MONTH
In Georgia, 36 percent of adults are overweight and another 29 percent are classified as obese. Combined, nearly two-thirds of Georgia's population is considered to be at an unhealthy weight. Furthermore, 1 in every 5 children in Georgia is obese; and
In 2009, the Georgia Legislature enacted the Student Health and Physical Education Act which required all students to enroll in physical education courses and participate in fitness assessments, the results of which are sent to parents; and
Georgia SHAPE, collects valuable data through a standardized fitness assessment, empowering children, parents, schools, and the community to make informed decisions about health-related fitness; and
Georgia SHAPE is a statewide, multiagency, multidimensional, initiative that brings together governmental, philanthropic, academic, and business communities to address childhood obesity. According to the 2014 SHAPE data, 40 percent of Georgia's children are overweight or obese, only 19 percent were able to pass the SHAPE basic fitness tests, and 19 percent of Georgia's children were unable to pass any of the SHAPE basic fitness tests; and
GeorgiaSHAPE.org offers access to Power Up for 30 and many other health and wellness resources. Georgia SHAPE is not about dieting or exercising, it is about instilling physically active and healthy lifestyles; and
Power Up for 30 day, a Georgia SHAPE statewide collaborative effort designed to empower individual elementary schools to increase physical activity time and improve health and academic outcomes, will be recognized on September 30, 201 5 and will acknowledge over 600 Georgia elementary schools that have implemented the program and encourage every other elementary school in Georgia to pledge today at GeorgiaSHAPE.org; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim September 201 5 as GEORGIA SHAPE MONTH.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 11th day of September in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen .
