A proclamation: Summer Food Service Program Week, May 21, 2015

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM WEEK

WHEREAS:

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered in Georgia by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL), provides nutritious meals to Georgia's children and youth during the summer months when school is not in session; and

WHEREAS:

Georgia's faith and community based organizations, local governments, corporate entities, and schools partner with DECAL to ensure that children and youth have access to healthy meals in safe, supervised environments during the summer; and

WHEREAS:

Between 2010 and 2014, the SFSP served over 18 million meals at an average of 1,400 sites throughout Georgia; and

WHEREAS:

The nutritious meals provided through the SFSP to children and youth help them continue to develop physically and mentally throughout the summer; and

WHEREAS:

DECAL is partnering with other state agencies and hunger-related advocacy organizations to increase the number of SFSP providers, sites, counties, and meals served in 201 5 so that more of Georgia's youngest citizens may benefit from this important program; now

THEREFORE:

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim june 1-5, 201 5, as SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM WEEK in Georgia.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 21st day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen.
