A proclamation: Philippine Independence Day, May 13, 2015

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
A PROCLAMATION

PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY

WHEREAS:

On June 12, 2015, Filipinos worldwide celebrate the anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence. In Georgia, Filipinos gather on this date to remember and honor the momentous occasion; and

WHEREAS:

The United States and the Philippines have had a close relationship since 1898 when the Philippines was ceded to the United States by Spain in the Treaty of Paris. The Philippines was part of the United States until 1946 and served as a valuable ally during World War II in the fight against Japan; and

WHEREAS:

For over 100 years, Filipino immigrants have greatly enriched our nation's culture and economy. Today, Filipinos comprise all levels of professional life, including serving as nurses, doctors, teachers, and engineers; and

WHEREAS:

Since the late 1960s, Georgians have greatly benefited from the Filipino community. Its members contribute to the diverse culture and economy of metro Atlanta, and participate in the religious, cultural, and social lives of their local communities. The State of Georgia has been fortunate to have Filipinos among its citizens and joins the nation's Filipino community in celebrating an important milestone in their proud heritage; now

THEREFORE: I, Nathan Deal, Governor of the State of Georgia, now do hereby proclaim June 12, 201 5, as PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY in Georgia, and convey my best wishes to all Georgians of Filipino heritage.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 13th day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen.
