BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
A PROCLAMATION
CHILDHOOD STROKE AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS:
Stroke occurs in 1 out of 1,600 births each year and in 11 out of 100,000 children per year, with stroke being the sixth leading cause of death in children; and
WHEREAS:
Over half of the children who experience a stroke will have serious, long-term neurological disabilities, including hemiplegia, paralysis, seizures, speech and vision problems, learning and behavioral difficulties, and may require ongoing physical therapy and surgeries; and
WHEREAS :
The permanent health problems and subsequent treatments stemming from childhood strokes result in a heavy financial and emotional liability on the child, the family, and society; and
WHEREAS:
Very little is known about the cause, treatment, and prevention of childhood strokes. Only through medical research can effective treatment and prevention strategies for pediatric strokes be identified and developed; and
WHEREAS:
An early diagnosis and commencement of treatment of childhood strokes greatly improves chances for recovery and prevention of recurrence; now
THEREFORE:
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 201 5 as CHILDHOOD STROKE AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 23rd day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen.
