BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
A PROCLAMATION
DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE
WHEREAS:
WHEREAS: WHEREAS: WHEREAS: THEREFORE:
The Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of Europe's Jewish population by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945. Six million individuals were murdered, with Jews being the primary victims. Roma, those with disabilities, and Poles were also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or national reasons. Millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, prisoners of war, and political dissidents also suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny; and
The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust was established to teach the lessons of the Holocaust to present and future generations of Georgians in order to create an awareness of the enormity of the crimes of prejudice and inhumanity and a vigilance to prevent their recurrence; and
The history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments. We the people of the State of Georgia should actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and
The Days of Remembrance have been set aside for the people of the State of Georgia to remember the victims of the Holocaust as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all people; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 12April 19, 2015, as DAYS OF REMEMBRANCE in Georgia and urge all citizens of our great state to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 1Qth day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen.
