A proclamation: Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Mar. 24, 2015

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION DISTRACTED DRIVING AWARENESS MONTH

WHEREAS:

Nearly 4,000 people are killed and another 421,000 injured each year as a result of distracted driving-related traffic crashes throughout the nation; and

In 2014, there were an estimated 8,581 distracted driving incidents in Georgia that resulted in 3,298 injuries and 19 deaths; and
The act of text messaging while driving increases the risk of crashing 23 times; and
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that driver distraction is the primary cause of 18 percent of all fatal crashes; and
A nationwide survey by the Centers for Disease Control found 69 percent of drivers ages 18-64 reported they talked on their cell phone while driving and 31 percent reported they read or sent text messages while driving; and

WHEREAS:

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety and the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association are partnering with EndDD in pledging to give distracted driving safety presentations to high school students in an effort to prevent injuries and fatalities as a result of distracted driving; now

THEREFORE: I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 201 5 as DISTRACTED DRIVING AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia.
