Like many other states, Georgia is vulnerable to extreme cold and winter storms that can bring snowand ice, sleet, and freezing rain which can damage property, disrupt travel, and cause power outages; and
Winter storms are considered "deceptive killers" because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Most people die in traffic accidents on icy roads and of hypothermia from prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. It also leads to power outages, and interrupts communication services to homes, schools , and businesses; and
Departments and agencies of the local, state, and federal government, in partnership with the private sector and faith-based community, are working to prevent and respond to winter weather emergencies; and
All Georgians are encouraged to prepare and plan for winter weather conditions by winterizing their homes, learning the terms used to identify winter weather, making a family communications plan, preparing a Ready kit of emergency supplies for their homes and cars, minimizing travel, and bringing pets indoors; and
The Georgia Emergency Management Agency / Office of Homeland Security maintains an ambitious and proactive Ready Georgia public relations campaign to help Georgians become better prepared for winter weather by encouraging residents to complete a personal profile on the Ready Georgia website at www.ready.ga.gov; and
The upgraded Ready Georgia app offers Georgians geo-targeted severe weather and emergency alerts, traffic information, and an enhanced shelters map that displays the location of open Red Cross shelters and warming centers along with directions from the users' current location; now
