A PROCLAMATION
7QTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Led by the vision and organizational skills of several remarkable women, the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra, which was to become the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, held its first concert on February 4, 1945, in the Municipal Auditorium on Courtland Street; and
Today, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is thriving under the musical direction of Maestro Robert Spano and will celebrate its 70th year throughout 2015. The ASO is recognized as one of the most creative and innovative orchestras in North America, bringing recognition and international acclaim to the State of Georgia; and
The Orchestra performs more than 200 concerts each year for a combined audience of more than a half million and reaches more than 67,000 students and underserved members of the community through its education and community outreach programs; and
The ASO has a remarkable history that includes the issuing of the very first ever digital recording of orchestral works to be placed into commercial distribution. This talented group also performed at the Kennedy Center for the Inauguration gala of President jimmy Carter as well as the Opening Ceremonies of the 1996 Olympic Games, presenting special concerts as part of the Cultural Olympics. The ASO has performed numerous times in Carnegie Hall, receiving enthusiastic reviews; and
The ASO, in concert with its renowned chorus, has been recognized for advancing the recording industry by creating a rich body of work of more than 100 commercial recordings. This tireless pursuit of artistic and recording excellence has resulted in 27 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Album, Best Orchestral Performance, Best Choral Performance, and Best Opera Recording; and
The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has touched countless hearts and spread good will during its 1988 European Debut Tour with Robert Shaw and the ASO Chorus as well as the 1991 European Tour with Music Director Yoel Levi. Its impact on our capital city, state, and communities around the world is invaluable; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby recognize February 4, 2015, as the 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA and congratulate all those who have had a hand in this exceptional organization's history as music-makers and outstanding cultural ambassadors for Atlanta and our state as a whole.
