A proclamation: Prescribed Burn Awareness Week, Jan. 30, 2015

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
A PROCLAMATION

PRESCRIBED BURN AWARENESS WEEK

WHEREAS:

Prescribed burning of Georgia's forest lands is a valuable tool for protecting the forest from devastating wildfires. The Georgia Prescribed Burning Act of 1992 declares and protects prescribed burning as a valuable and necessary forest management tool; and

WHEREAS:

Prescribed burning is an economically feasible forest management tool for managing valuable wildlife species such as the bobwhite quail, the eastern wild turkey, the white-tailed deer, the red-cockaded woodpecker, and a multitude of other fire-dependent species; and

WHEREAS:

Prescribed burning is the only known forest management tool for perpetuating the longleaf pinejwiregrass ecosystem, the most diverse Georgia ecosystem in terms of flora and fauna; and

WHEREAS:

Professional foresters and other land resource managers use prescribed burning for improving forest health, reducing hazardous fuels, and for reforestation; and

WHEREAS:

The Georgia Forestry Commission, along with partner agencies and organizations across the state, support, promote, educate and train for the continued use of prescribed burning; now

THEREFORE:

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim February 2-6, 2015, as PRESCRIBED BURN AWARENESS WEEK in Georgia and thank those land managers who protect and maintain Georgia's natural heritage for present and future generations.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 30th day of january in the year of our Lord two thousand fifteen.
