BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GE ORGIA
A PROCLAMATION
CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
WHEREAS:
Emigration from the Caribbean region to the American Colonies began as early as 1619. Since that time, millions of people have come from the Caribbean to the United States; and
WHEREAS:
People of Caribbean descent reside in every part of the United States and have greatly influenced American culture, society, and government; and
WHEREAS:
The State of Georgia is one of the most culturally-enriched and diverse states in the Southeastern United States and is the home of over 250,000 Caribbean Nationals; and
WHEREAS:
Caribbean Americans have significantly contributed to many areas, including education, fine arts, business, sports, science, and more, positively affecting the lives of all citizens in this state and nation; and
WHEREAS:
Caribbean Americans have played an active role in the civil rights movement, and they continue to make important contributions to social and political issues facing Georgia and our nation; now
THEREFORE:
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim june 2014 as CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH in Georgia and urge all citizens to recognize the contributions of Caribbean Americans to our state.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 28th day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen.
