BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA
A PROCLAMATION
TOURElTE'S SYN DROME AWARENESS MONTH
WHEREAS:
Tourette's syndrome is a neurological disorder which occurs in early childhood or adolescence before the age of 18 years old. Among children With Tourette's syndrome, 27 percent have been reported as having moderate or severe forms of the condition; and
WHEREAS :
Tourette's syndrome is defined by the presence of multiple motor and vocal tics lasting for more than one year. While it is often thought to cause frequent outbursts of obscene language by those afflicted with the disorder, such behavior is only common in fewer than 15 percent of Tourette's sufferers; and
WHEREAS:
Tourette's affects over 200,000 people in the United States and is equally likely to occur in all races and ethnic groups, which can have a detrimental impact on learning. Problems in dealing with tics, often combined with attention deficits and other learning difficulties, call for special education assistance; and
WHEREAS:
Georgians should be aware that this disorder impacts many families in our state and country. Our citizens are encouraged to become educated about Tourette's syndrome and to help spread awareness of its effects; now
THEREFORE: I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim June 2014 as TOURETTE'S SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia.
