BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA

A PROCLAMATION

MULTIRACIAL HERITAGE WEEK

WHEREAS:

Georgia has a multiracial population of over 200,000 people, representing 2.1 percent of the state population according to the 2010 census. The percentage change from 2000 to 201 0 grew by 81.7 percent as this population is one of the fastest growing in the state. There are currently over 9 million individuals who self-identify as more than one race in the United States; and

WHEREAS:

Georgia has a long and positive history of advocating for all of its children. Project RACE (Reclassify All Children Equally) is a national organization representing multiracial children, teens, adults, and families with a presence in Georgia since 1993; and

WHEREAS:

Members of this community have made many valuable historical contributions that often go unnoticed and underappreciated; and

WHEREAS:

Children in Georgia schools are now able to check as many races as possible on school forms, and public and private schools in the state are encouraged to include wording in keeping with positive identity practices that reflect the terminology of "multiracial"; and

WHEREAS:

Georgia benefits from vibrant communities comprised of ethnically diverse individuals. Members of these communities can be found in every level of professional life and greatly enrich our state's well-being; now

THEREFORE:

I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim june 12-19, 2014, as MULTIRACIAL HERITAGE WEEK in Georgia.

In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 24th day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen.
