A PROCLAMATION
CYSTIC FIBROSIS AWARENESS MONTH

THEREFORE:
Thousands of Americans, including many Georgians, are impacted each year by cystic fibrosis (CF), a life-threatening, genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system; and
Organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which is comprised of chapters across the country and in Georgia, endeavor to find a cure for CF and to improve the quality of life for people living with the disease. Thanks to these noble efforts, the life expectancy of a child with this disease has doubled in the past 30 years, and research to find a cure is more promising than ever; and
Nevertheless, the lives of those struggling with CF are still cut far too short, requiring greater support and expedited research to find more effective treatments and an eventual cure; and
States play a vital role in protecting access to specialized CF care and treatments through programs that help more than half of all children and over a third of adults with the disease afford care; and
Through the dedicated work of organizations like the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, those with CF can now live into their 30s and beyond. More needs to be done, however, to help extend the lives of those with the disease. The Foundation has invested more than $4 million in Georgia over the last several years for research and care initiatives. Our state's commitment to this community is essential to securing additional clinical trials to be conducted through Georgia research hospitals; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 2014 as CYSTIC FIBROSIS AWARENESS MONTH in Georgia and encourage all citizens to help raise awareness and support research of this disease.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 24th day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen.
