A PROCLAMATION
WELSH HERITAGE DAY
Many people of note descend from Welsh ancestry, including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Abraham Lincoln; and
As early as 1640, citizens from the country of Wales began immigrating to North America and settled in what would become Pennsylvania. From there, they would move south and settle in the State of Georgia; and
These settlers were some of Georgia's earliest, setting up a community that would later become Rockmart, Georgia; and
During those days, these early pioneers took to the slate mines in the area, and found success shipping slate products all over the globe, earning this early settlement the name "Rock Mart"' and
It is important to educate Georgia's citizens of our early history and development. The Welsh societies that called this great state home are indeed a pivotal part of Georgia's founding and future success; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim March 15, 2014, as WELSH HERITAGE DAY in Georgia.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 14th day of February in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen.
