A PROCLAMATION

ASIAN-PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE DAY

Throughout our history, Asian-Pacific Americans have made great contributions to our collective heritage and have enriched the quality of life here in Georgia. Our state is fortunate to be home to more than 300,000 residents of Asian-Pacific American heritage. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, this community is one of the fastest growing and most diverse populations in the country, composed of over 45 distinct ethnicities and over 28 language groups; and
Asian-Pacific Americans have impacted all facets of life in Georgia, including arts and culture, heritage preservation, the sciences, government affairs, business, education, and philanthropy; and
Chinese Americans, Korean Americans, Vietnamese Americans, and many others celebrate the Lunar New Year - an important holiday that provides an opportunity for renewal and new opportunities. This year's celebration marks the Year of the Horse; and
During the observance of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Day, we celebrate the cultural traditions, ancestry, native languages, and unique experiences represented among ethnic groups from Asia and the Pacific found here in the United States. We also recognize millions of Asian-Pacific Americans whose hard work and love of family and community have helped sustain us as a nation; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim January 31, 2014, as ASIAN-PACIFIC AMERICAN HERITAGE DAY in Georgia.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 28th day of January in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen.
