A PROCLAMATION
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
African Americans have played a critical role in the history of both the nation and the State of Georgia. During the month of February, we commemorate and celebrate the courageous men and women of color who have impacted our culture and history; and
For many generations, African Americans have strengthened and contributed to our society by overcoming obstacles, breaking down barriers, urging reform, and inspiring whole movements dedicated to the betterment of mankind; and
Many notable African American Georgians have impacted the history of our state and nation in a profound way, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Congressman John Lewis, international statesman and two-term Mayor of Atlanta Andrew Young, Hank Aaron, and countless others; and
It is altogether fitting to honor the noble endeavors of everyday African American heroes as well who make a difference in communities all across Georgia. Following in their footsteps by promoting understanding, kindness, and respect, we can continue to strengthen our state and renew our efforts to construct a society in which every person, regardless of race, color, or creed, can realize the promise of America; and
As we celebrate the lives and actions of so many deserving Americans during this month, we must also recognize the racial prejudice which continues to live in certain parts of our society. We must all strongly resist the reprehensible immorality of racism wherever we may find it so that we can give our children an even brighter future; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim February 2014 as BLACK HISTORY MONTH in Georgia and urge all citizens to observe this month with appropriate celebrations, service projects, programs, and activities that honor the contributions of African Americans throughout our history.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 24th day of January in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen.
