A proclamation: Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week, Jan. 23, 2014

A PROCLAMATION ORAL, HEAD, AND NECK CANCER AWARENESS WEEK

Over 50,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with cancer of the head and neck, and less than 60 percent of all head and neck cancer patients live over five years following their diagnosis; and
Over 85 percent of all oral, head, and neck cancers can be prevented, but only a small percentage of the population understands the disease, its causes, treatments, and prevention strategies; and
A significant number of individuals treated for this disease encounter disability due to breathing, swallowing, speaking, and other disabilities; and
Increased awareness of this disease could result in earlier diagnosis, lower functional disability, and higher survival rates; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim the week of April 20-26, 2014, as ORAL, HEAD, AND NECK CANCER AWARENESS WEEK with August 8, 2014, as ORAL, HEAD, AND NECK CANCER AWARENESS DAY.
In witness thereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the Executive Department to be affixed this 23rd day of january in the year of our Lord two thousand fourteen.
