During the American Revo lution , George Washington and Alexander Hamilton both called for the creation of a federally controlled contingency force to support the Army. Theodore Roosevelt renewed this call in 1905 in a message to Congress; and
In 1908, the United States Congress established the Medical Reserve Corps to provide a reservoir of trained officers in times of war, realizing that the most u p-ta- date medical experience resided in the civilian sector. Nat ional defense legis lation in 1916 and 1920 expanded this force, creating the Officers Reserve Corps and the Enlisted Reserve Corps. Combined , these organizations would evolve into the modern U.S. Army Reserve; and
In 1952, legislation renamed the Officers Reserve Corps as the Army Reserve and then divided it into three sections - a Ready Reserve, Standby Reserve, and Retired Reserve. Legislation also provided that the reserve un its have twenty-four training d ays and up to seventee n days o f annual train i ng; and
Over its 100-year existence, the Army Reserve has played a major ro le in the defense of our nation and its soldiers have served nobly in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, t he Cold War, Panama, th e Pe rsian Gulf, Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq, and t he Global War on Terrorism. Over 12,000 Arm.Y Reserve soldiers are currently deployed around the world ; and
The Army Reserve 's more than 205 ,000 highly-skilled and dedicated soldiers provide critical support to the Army, which could not sustain operations without it. The Army Reserve makes up twenty percent o f the Army's organized units wh ile providing one half of the Army's combat support and one- fourth of its mobilization base expansion capabilities; and
Georgia is exceedingly proud t o have been the home of the U.S. Army Reserve Command for over 20 yea rs. Today, Georgia is home to 78 Army Reserve units, including the 3rd Medical Command and the 335 1h Theater Signal Command, where 10,000 Georgia Army Reserve Soldiers proudly se rve. T he freedoms and liberties we are blessed to enjoy are a direct result of the courage, devotion, and sacrifice of our brave men and women in uniform . Georgia is committed to honoring t hem and their great fidelity to our state and nation; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim April 23, 20 13, as the celebration of the 105 th ANNIVERSARY OF T HE UNITED STATES ARMY RESERVE in Georg ia and encourage all citizens to recognize our soldiers fo r t heir service.
