A PROCLAMATION

TOURElTE'S SYNDROME AWARENESS MONTH

WHEREAS:

Tourette ' s syndrome is a neurological disorder which occurs in early chi ldhood or adolescence before the age of 18 years old. Among children with Tourette 's syndrome, 27 percent have been reported as having moderate o r severe forms of the condition; an d

WHEREAS :

Tou rette' s syndrome is defined by t he presence of multiple motor and vocal ti cs lasting f or more t han one year. While it is often thought to cause f requent outbursts of obscene language by t hose afflicted with the d isorde r, such behavior is only common in fewer than 15 percent of Tourette' s sufferers; and

WHEREAS :

Tourette 's affects over 200,000 people in the United States and is equal ly l ikely to occur in all races and ethnic groups, which can have a detrimental i mpact on learning. Problems in dealing with tics, often comb ined with attention deficits and other learning difficulties, often call for spec ial educatio n assistance; and

WHEREAS:

Georg ians should be aware t hat t hi s disorder impacts many fam il ies in ou r state and country, and Georg ians are encouraged to become educated about Tourette 's syndrome and to help spread awareness of its effects; now
