BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA-

A PROCLAMATION

OPERATION LIFESAVER MONTH

Operation Lifesaver is a nonprofit nationwide public education program to help reduce collisions, fatalities, and injuries at highway-rail grade cros~ings. It also serves to reduce trespassing in cidents on railroad tracks and rail properties; and
The State of Georg ia was the fourth state in the United States to form an Operation Lifesaver program in 1974, serving as a model for the nation ; and
Great strides have been made in reducing collisions at Georgia 's nearly 8,000 public and private cross ings, resulting in a decrease of over 83 percent since the program's inception; and
Free training programs for all first responders, profess ional truckers, and schoo l bus drivers are offered in Georgia, as well as safety educational presentations for the general public, urging adults and children to "Look, Listen, and Live" at railroad crossings and on railroad rights-of-way with special activities conducted during the month of May; and
A special continuous Whistle-Stop train will come through Georgia, spon so red by Norfolk Southern, to heighten awareness of railroad safety; now
I, NATHAN DEAL, Governor of the State of Georgia do hereby proclaim May 201 3 as OPERATION LIFESAVER MONTH in Georgia, and urge all our cit izens to drive safely and cautious ly when approaching a highway-rail crossing, to obey the law by always yielding to oncoming trains, and to avoid trespass i ng on railroad tracks and rights-of-way.
